Taking Time in Torrey Pines

After making the long (but gorgeous) drive from L.A. to San Diego, I wanted to spend lots of time outdoors, enjoying the warm SoCal sunshine.

I had one more school to visit first, but since schools close around 3, I had plenty of time to make the short drive from La Jolla to Torrey Pines state park, a place recommended to me by one of the students I interviewed that day!

I put on my running gear, thinking this would be the perfect opportunity for a run, but when I got there, all I could do is sit and stare at the beautiful Pacific Ocean in front of me. The blue water gently crashed into the rocky coast, the seaside birds were enjoying leftovers from earlier visitors, and the golden sunshine illuminated everything.
I sat in silence for almost an hour, when I was startled by a runner along the rocky path next to me. Instead of jumping up to run as well, I walked back to the car and grabbed my latest read: The Monkey Wrench Gang (a perfect read for western adventures!).

I sat there along the rocky beach and read, read, read, occasionally glancing at the waves and the setting sun. I stopped just as the sun set, and caught this beautiful vision.

Since I missed my run, I made plans instead to attend a nearby Turbo Kick class. I found it through a quick google search. I was so excited for this opportunity, because Turbo Kick stared in CA. I knew the class would be awesome and just what I needed after all my traveling.

The class totally kicked my butt! The instructor, Angela, has been teaching for a few years and mixed a variety of the lessons together. I loved seeing some of the moves I recognized from the past few lessons and also moves I’d not yet experienced. I have so many great ideas for my class! I left the class feeling like I got a good workout, invigorated for the rest of the week’s travel schedule, and a new sense of excitement that I have earned the privilege to teach such a great fitness class format. What more could I ask for from a workout?
Even though I ended the day with an intense Turbo Kick class, I loved having the opportunity to just…be. I often pack my schedule with task after task, not really taking the time in between to appreciate what I have, what I’ve accomplished, and the amazing feeling of just living.

I had that moment in Torrey Pines. I’m so grateful, too, because I know the next few weeks will be some of my most hectic – between back-to-back travel, reading the steadily increasing stacks of applications, prepping for my next half marathon, and a variety of home reno projects. I’m excited for all the amazing things I’ll be able to do, but also look forward to being able to teach my fitness classes, go for a nice, long run in my favorite little town, and spend quality time at home with my two kittens.
