Coffee Talk #188: On the Move

If we were having coffee together today, I’d tell you that I, like Aslan, am on the move. Are you feeling the impact of the levels of restrictions? Where I live, things are re-opening, but masks are still highly recommended/sometimes required and social distancing is a must. But it also depends where you are and who you are with…like I would NOT go mask-less in the grocery store, but I attended a funeral where people were loose with masks and a work meeting where most people didn’t wear one. I’m still on the fence.

I wrote about this a little last week, but I’m feeling this way still – I’m 100% ok to teach and play and be outdoors (though not in terribly close proximity, that still FREAKS me out), but I hate going inside anywhere, I almost try to hold my breath (weird). I’m also SO OVER this and feeling weird about it and almost feeling shamed for wanting to keep my distance. I’m also itching to go on a trip. I don’t want to be near people but I’d be ok staying in a hotel. We’re like in this middle space right now.

If we were having coffee together this week, I’d tell you that I’m not ready to teach indoors but also terrified about losing my teaching gigs at gyms. In some ways, this might be a good chance to move on, but in others, I realize that the overwhelming response to virtual and outdoor fitness will eventually subside. I’m already seeing other fit profesh friends cool the social and virtual classes a bit, and many are ecstatic to teach at gyms/studios again. I’m glad I don’t own a facility right now, but it’s also going to get summer hot and then winter cold and I won’t be able to keep this incredible pace.

If we were having coffee together today, I’d tell you that I did not expect to be offering so many private group sessions. I’m feeling so much love and light with these private groups, and it’s becoming one of my favorite ways to share fitness!

While I’m riding the high of all the outdoor fun, virtual classes, and more, I know it can change in a moment. The unknown is scary. What do you prioritize? What could be next? How do you plan for an uncertain near future? People may love the options now, but once gyms open, will that be it for me? Will people continue to sign up for zoom classes? Will I grow the desire to teach indoors again at a gym?!

If we were having coffee together today, I’d tell you that I’m on the move in the house again. Recap: one of the first room transformations husband chose to tackle is my fitness studio. It needed major drywall work, painting, a new floor – the works. While that was in progress, I used my office as my temporary fitness studio. My temporary office was our dining room. Then we got new dining room furniture, so I had to move my temporary office into my real office, giving me no room for fitness videos. So I mostly did videos outside, on the deck, patio, or porch.

Then husband finished most of the work on my studio. I was mostly teaching outside, but then we had really hot days and really rainy days, so I started slowly moving my teaching items and video equipment upstairs. Then I was moving it up and down, up and down, depending on where I was teaching in the house. I ended up purchasing a duplicate set of equipment so I could stop constantly moving everything.

So basically, now everything is in a bit of disarray. I’m teaching a LOT right now, so spending hours setting up spaces has not been in the cards. I’m also deep into the Yoga & Barre Private group and getting ready for the launch of the Summer Strong Group (starts June 22- register here). I’m definitely looking hard at my calendar to schedule some much-needed space setting-up time! One thing that really pushes us is knowing we will have people over to the house – like upcoming Father’s Day. We always seem to push a little harder with set-up when we have guests coming.

  1. I’m not in any rush to go back to the gym. I actually finally cancelled our membership that was on hold since October. There are too many unknowns to want to go back and get all sweaty with fellow gym goers indoors.

    I’ll be sticking with you virtually, even once we leave C-Town in the fall!
