Coffee Talk #215: Establish a Word of the Year

It’s Tuesday! Grab your cup and let’s start chattin’.

What if I told you that you can make your goals become reality? That YOU are the missing key to make a dream become real? Yep, you.

One of my favorite practices is to establish a guiding or focus word of the year. This gives me purpose as I make a plan of action for each quarter, month, week, and day.

I used to set a long list of goals for the year and then I’d get frustrated mid-year when I hadn’t completed any of them. I find setting a word for the year really creates focus and allows me to be vigilant in my word but flexible in the pursuit. The guiding word allows me to make better choices, say yes to things I love, and no to things I don’t.

My word of 2021? STRONG

Why Strong? I love the way this word makes me feel. I say strong and immediately I’m thinking about flexing muscles, I pull my core a little tighter, my gaze becomes more steady and focused. This word gets me PUMPED up.

I’m also really interested in STRENGTH training. Pre-pandemic, I had a really nice flow going with 3x/week gym workouts. I’ve started to recreate those vibes in my home studio as much as possible, getting creative with using different items as weights. I love how my body looks when I’m strong, I love how I feel, and I also want to empower others to find their strong.

Strong is also a word that I find women tend to shy away from using. I think this is starting to dissipate, but I hear things like ‘tone’ or ‘lean out’ or ‘get lighter and tighter’ a lot in the fitness industry, and those are all just watered-down words for STRONG. Let’s make STRONG a thing again, for EVERYONE.

How I’m planning to be STRONG in 2021:

  • 3x/week strength workouts for me
  • More virtual groups and classes built around STRENGTH
  • Personal training clients with building strength in mind
  • Sharing more mental and emotional tools to build strength
  • Having better boundaries and saying ‘no’ to what does not serve me
  • Having the strength to reach out and ask for help when needed
  • Growing my fitness business to rely solely on FWA, not other gyms

How can you choose your word?

  1. What served me best in 2020?
  2. What do I want MORE of this year?
  3. Where did I waste time in 2020?
  4. What did NOT serve me?
  5. What makes me FEEL GOOD?

Your word should set the tone for the year. This should be your focus or intention for how you choose to spend your time. Something doesn’t fit into your word? Say no to it. The best way to reach your goals is to focus energy toward them. A word of the year helps to pave the path toward this focused energy.

No one saw 2020 coming. But guess what? No one saw 2019 or 2018 or 2017… the point is that we can’t control what happens around us but we can build intention and focus on ourselves and how we react to what’s in front of us.
