Coffee Talk Tuesday #112

It’s Tuesday! Let’s have a Coffee Talk.

If we were having coffee together today, I’d bring up this topic of conversation:

Find 3 Hobbies you Love

  • One to Make you Money
  • One to Keep you in Shape
  • One to Be Creative

I’ve seen this “life hack” in various forms, most recently on the Bucket List Family instagram. I’m bringing it up today because husband and I were talking about it this weekend. He made a comment that my hobby IS work — I love to have jobs and be busy and be productive. I’m currently working 4 different jobs. Our conversation made me think of this hobbies statement — the ideal is to have three.

My four jobs and how they fit into this grid:

  • MBRT/Next Gen Scholars Coordinator
    • makes me money
    • allows me to be creative (but with stricter standards, following a grant)
  • Fitness Instruction
    • makes me money (that I invest in more fitness…)
    • allows me to be creative – I love coming up with fun new routines and workouts
    • keeps me in shape
  • Design/Web/Social Management/Writing work
    • allows me to be creative (but at the mercy of my clients)
    • makes me money
    • BONUS: allows time flexibility. I really dig contract/gig work that has a clear end date.
  • Bath & Body Seasonal Work
    • makes me money
    • BONUS: short-term, clear end date

In the case of my “hobby” jobs, they all make me money, and they allow the ability to be creative. My fitness job keeps me in shape, but I also take classes for that purpose.

I lean toward jobs that allow me to be creative — I need to create things. It’s one of my strongest needs for a work environment. I like having a template, but I also love to color outside the lines. For my fitness and design work – I create something from nothing, and I feel very proud of this ability.

Another hobby that hits all three of these areas is fitness certifications – I love to learn. It’s important as a fitness professional to keep abreast of all the new formats, restrictions, and ideas surrounding healthy living. I have 3 new fitness certifications in my head to tackle in 2019 and (likely) 2020 already. The biggest complication for the certifications I want to gain is cost (and time which is similar to cost), but if I make it a priority, that part is extremely negotiable in my head.

What do you think about this? Do you have 3 easily-identifiable hobbies, and do they fall into these 3 categories?
