Fitness Friday #14: 5 Travel Fit Tips
It’s inevitable: at some point you’ll find yourself on a trip, away from home. Vacations are awesome, everyone deserves the opportunity to kick back and relax. But sometimes you have to travel for work. I happen to travel a lot for my job.
In order to keep up with the fit lifestyle and not lose consistency –which isĀ essential for success–I’ve developed a few tricks to keep healthy on the road.
1. Drink lots of water.
Drink even more water than normal when you travel. Sometimes, I head to the Rocky Mountains, where the air is thinner. Drinking more water than normal is essential just to feel like myself. Add working out to that list, and I’m guzzling water constantly. Extra tip: bring an empty water bottle with you, pack it in your carry-on if you are traveling by plane. Airports usually have water bottle filling stations. Then you don’t have to pay $4+ for bottled water!
2. Sleep.
It’s so easy to get off track when traveling and forget to get those precious Zzzzs. But sleeping during travel is super important. Extra tip: invest in ear plugs and a sleeping mask – these things help when you’re sleeping in an unfamiliar environment with different sounds.
3. Google fitness classes.
One of my favorite things to do on the road is take other fitness classes! As an instructor, I find it extremely hard to attend other fitness classes when my schedule is packed with planning, teaching, and work. But on the road? I’m not teaching classes, so I love to try something new! Most branded fitness classes have searchable class websites (check out Zumba, Beachbody, and more) where instructors will enter their class information. Extra tip: call ahead. Sometimes instructors forget to update their information, so the class is no longer operating. I’ve found that calling ahead to confirm the class saves precious workout time.
4. Find an outdoor adventure.
Consult the Google to find a nearby park, nature trail, or more. I love, love, love getting to know the area when I’m traveling. Recent travels have taken me to the Hollywood Hills, the Flatirons, Mount Bonnell in Austin, and Aspen trails. Get outside and play!
5. Find stores with a salad bar.
Okay, the food. The food! This is so essential. Depending where you travel, you’ll want to taste the local flavor. By all means, do it! But keep it in check. For 85% of your meals, search for fresh greens, juices, and lighter options. My best thing? I find a Whole Foods or equivalent and make the salad bar my BFF. Extra tip: stay light on the dressing and the bread – these add up both cost and calories. Keep piling on the greens!
