Fitness Friday #43 How to Chaturanga

This week, as part of my Pro Tip series on the facebook page, I shared a how-to video on a basic yoga form, the chaturanga.

The chaturanga is the one move I recommend to all clients who are looking to improve strength, balance, and those looking to get started with arm balances. THIS move will help you see progress, but only if performed correctly.

I show proper form from the front and side views in this video.

A few keys to get this move DOWN:

  1. Space the hands shoulder-width apart — this will help with proper elbow alignment
  2. Push slightly forward on the toes as you move down toward the ground
  3. Tuck the elbows into the sides, make sure the elbows scrape the side of the body as you lower down to the ground
  4. Press into the fingertips to help with balance

Give it a try! BONUS – to build even more strength, and to see those results more quickly, practice this move for 30-60 seconds in 2-3 sets. It’s a CHALLENGE for sure, but really helps with overall strength and balance.

Holding this posture opened the door to arm balances such as these:
