Make the sushi

Confession: I’ve had sushi twice now this week. Once out with friends, and once at home. That’s perfectly normal, right??

At the little house on Pine, it’s always sushi time.

Have you ever tried hand rolling sushi at home? It’s so much fun!!

(Check out my “how to” guide for sushi rollin‘)

I always make too much. But I never hear any complaints!

This time around, I had a couple of almost-ripe avocados, and some leftover boiled eggs (Shane loves having boiled eggs around for post-workout fuel).

Avocado and egg rolls? Sounds like sushi rolls to me!

The rice is the most time consuming part of rolling sushi. It takes about 30 minutes to make from start to finish.

Tip: make sure to rinse your sushi rice before boiling! Place in a pot, and run cold water over the rice, pouring out the water as it rises to a level just beyond the rice line. Keep rinsing until the water is clear in the pot!

Once the rice is ready, and has been properly fluffed with a fork – (don’t forget to fluff!),  you’re ready for some sushi roll action.

Dab your fingers in some rice vinegar, spread your rice, and place the vegetable, meat, whatever on top. Be creative with your filling! The best sushi rolls I’ve had included apple slices and baked sweet potato.
This is my serious sushi face. Do you like the random okra on the counter? It’s decor!
Rolling the nori is my favorite part! Roll it tight!
So. much. sushi.

We have these lovely sushi sets — the light green pieces were a gift from a fab Philly friend, the darker green pieces were a gift from a special swamp lady, and the tan/blue pieces were handmade by Shane’s pottery-makin’ Aunt Marsha.

Add a little green tea, and that sounds like a fab meal to me!

How do you take your sushi?
