Ten Years of Teaching Group Fitness
It’s official! May 2, 2019, marks 10 years of being able to teach group fitness. I started leading group fitness in 2009, starting with Zumba.
I’ve written about becoming a fitness instructor before, sharing my journey to teaching.
How did I go from the girl in baggy clothes in the back row to leading fitness classes?
I put in effort. I showed up and refused to take no for an answer. Were there times I doubted myself? Yes. Times I wanted to give up, throw in the towel? Yes. But I persisted.
I created this video that shares the evolution of FWA.
It all started in 2009 with Zumba. Shortly after the first workshop, I attended a basic skills 2 and a Zumba toning class.
That worked for awhile, and then I wanted MORE for myself. I concentrated on my own fitness path, running tons of races, finding a yoga practice, and flirting with lifting. I cut the number of Zumba classes I was teaching in a week (girl can only do certain songs so many times before she goes crazy), but that left me wanting more for my students!
I found Powder Blue Productions, which offered Turbo Kick and PiYo. I loved both and quickly worked through the certification and workshops. When PB joined forces with Beachbody, I was introduced to Insanity, which I loved being able to offer!
This kept me going for awhile, but I’m always hungry for more knowledge. I attended a training for Pound, which I taught for awhile, until I decided to put more energy into learning barre and Buti, which I did NOT want to teach at first, but I realized how much I love these formats, and it would be awesome to share them with others.
The next year will be focused on my 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training, and a fun certification – Hip Hop Step. I love expanding my fitness offerings and learning new styles!
Here’s to 10+ more years of teaching group fitness!
