Walking in L.A.

Hello from sunny California! I’ve been here four days, spreading the good word about Washington College to L.A. And San Diego schools (such a tough life!).

It hasn’t been all work (though it has been quite a lot of work. And smiling.); I did get a chance to play in SoCal, too!

My version of playing in a new place always includes an outdoor adventure. Sometimes, it’s an exhilarating run or an historic walk. This time, my mission was to hike all the hills!

So excited for some outdoor away-from-the-city time!

I knew what I wanted to see for my first outdoor adventure! Definitely rattlesnakes!

I wanted to get a closer look at the Hollywood sign and see what the city looks like from the hills.

I got to Beachwood Drive just as the sun started to set. I got the chance to see everything illuminated by the last golden rays.

Simply breathtaking. I spent several moments here, just basking in the glow of the warm sunshine. (I didn’t even encounter rattlesnakes as promised!).

After some time, I turned and made the climb up the steep, steep hills to get even closer to the top. There were something like 50 miles of trails in this area.

As quiet (and sometimes lonely) as the recruiting world can be, I enjoyed these peaceful moments atop the hills by myself. Rarely do I create the opportunity for myself to stop and reflect on all of the things I have the privilege to do. I found myself missing my fitness class students, but also grateful for the brief break from the hectic teaching schedule. I found myself thinking about all of the applications likely piling on my desk, but remembered that I’m becoming a better counselor and mentor by expanding the College’s network and student base out west. I found myself oddly comfortable on my own in a new place, like I might have a similar adventure waiting for me again soon.

I certainly love a good adventure, so I’m ready for it!

I covered a ton of ground walking along the Hollywood hills and just as the sun set for good, I made my way back down the hillside and called it a night!
